The most picturesque views of the fort’s emblematic tangerine-colored rooftops, charming interior, the infinite-looking Indian ocean, and Galle’s famous International Cricket Ground are provided by the towering outer fortifications.
The Galle Lighthouse, Old Dutch Hospital, Meeran Mosque, and All Saints Church are among the significant landmarks within the fort that you will encounter during the three-hour trek that commences at the historical Clock Tower.
I highly recommend that you take this magnificent promenade in the morning or late afternoon if you are like me and intend to investigate every inch of the historic Galle Fort.

Travelers have been flocking to Galle Fort for years, and its popularity has surged to new heights since the emblematic Galle Lighthouse went viral on Instagram.
Galle Lighthouse, a picturesque structure with the shimmering Indian Ocean as its backdrop, is situated on the most southern fortifications of the citadel and surrounded by palm trees.
The British initially constructed the historical lighthouse in 1848; however, the current construction is not the original iteration of the lighthouse.
The construction was destroyed by fire in 1936 due to an unfortunate incident; however, it was effectively rebuilt in 1939.
The Galle Lighthouse is a must-see attraction in Galle Fort, as it is unquestionably the most iconic landmark of the citadel at present.

Galle Fort is replete with magnificent colonial structures, and exploring its narrow, cobblestone laneways is undoubtedly one of the most enjoyable activities in Galle.
Galle Fort’s allure is the distinct atmosphere that these decaying colonial structures generate, which is in stark contrast to the rest of Sri Lanka.
It is no surprise that Galle Fort was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as the fort’s captivating and VOC-like character is defined by colonial buildings that are visible from every angle.

A thriving retail and dining area has been transformed from the Old Dutch Hospital, which was originally established as a hospital. One of the earliest structures in Galle Fort is the Dutch Hospital, which was constructed in the 17th century.
The Dutch Reformed Church is one of the earliest Protestant congregations in Sri Lanka, with a history that dates back to 1755. The chapel would have been destroyed by the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami if it were not for the Fort’s sturdy ramparts.

At times, it can be quite difficult to be courageous enough to engage in a genuine conversation or request someone’s portrait, particularly in light of the language barrier.
However, one certainty is that Galle Fort is one of the most ideal locations to engage in conversation with Sri Lankans, who are widely regarded as some of the most amiable individuals in the world.

Galle Fort is the ideal destination for purchasing in Sri Lanka, whether you are in search of a distinctive souvenir, exquisitely crafted handicrafts, or natural health and beauty products that are rooted in the therapeutic rituals of Ayurveda.
In particular, Pedlar Street is replete with intriguing stores, including art galleries, handicraft stores, saunas, boutiques, and jewel stores. If you are a fan of arts and crafts, as I am, then exploring Pedlar Street to appreciate the craftsmanship is one of the most enjoyable activities in Galle.
However, do not anticipate obtaining a discount; Galle Fort is one of the most popular destinations in Sri Lanka, which implies that you will not receive the most favorable price.

Barefoot is a store that is renowned for its exceptional ambiance. Barefoot offers a diverse array of traditional artisan handicrafts, such as fabrics, linen, clothing, and souvenirs.
Stick no bills | One of my favorite establishments in Galle Fort, and it is widely recognized for its vintage ‘Ceylon’ poster art. Stick no bills is an excellent store to purchase a souvenir for yourself or a loved one.

It is time to ascend the fort’s ramparts to witness a magnificent sunset as it reflects upon the glistening Indian Ocean, following an active day of investigating all that Galle Fort has to offer.
Locals and tourists alike congregate at the fort’s ramparts each day at sunset, transforming it into a joyful event.
The environment is characterized by a high level of energy, as children engage in a variety of activities, balloons soar in the colorful sky, and travelers converse and unwind while observing the world.
It is highly recommended that you secure a position on the western portion of the wall. The conclusion of your day at this location is undeniably one of the most delectable activities in Galle Fort.

7 | EXPLORE THE GALLE MARKETS
You will have to acknowledge that the ambiance of a local market is frequently unparalleled in terms of authenticity, and it is an ideal location to become acquainted with the culture of a country. This is evidently also the situation in the lively Galle Markets.
Several authentic markets are located just outside Galle Fort, where a diverse selection of local produce is sold. This includes the finest vegetables, freshly caught seafood, and high-quality seasonings and herbs, including delectable tropical fruits.

BEST RESTAURANTS IN GALLE FORT | WHERE TO EAT IN GALLE FORT
When you are surrounded by a diverse array of exceptional restaurants, it is effortless to locate one that aligns with your preferences.
I am of the firm conviction that the fortifications of the vibrant Galle Fort are home to some of Sri Lanka’s most distinctive restaurants. The colonial ambiance of the fortress is truly enchanting.
I found the following restaurants to be particularly enjoyable:
Chambers Restaurant | Offers the most delectable Mediterranean cuisine, including Lebanese, Moroccan, and Middle Eastern dishes. The cuisine in this location is tantalizing; however, it is more costly than it is in Sri Lanka.
Poonie’s Kitchen is an exceptional café that prepares the most delectable and nutritious contemporary dishes using locally sourced produce. Poonie’s is most renowned for its Instagrammable’salad Thali’, which is an absolute must-try when dining there.
The Indian Hut is an ideal destination for those seeking delectable Indian cuisine at an affordable price. Those who have been reading WTSW for an extended period of time may recall my fondness for piquant curries. I suggest that you visit the Indian Hut if you are a fan of piquant cuisine, as I am.
Coconut Sambol | Coconut Sambol is a delectable dish that is reminiscent of its eponymous counterpart. It is undeniably one of the finest Sri Lankan restaurants in Galle Fort. An all-you-can-eat buffet is available, featuring a variety of delectable curries, rice, and my personal favorite, coconut sambal. If you have an affinity for ginger, be certain to sample their handcrafted ginger beer.

LOCATIONS TO RESIDE IN GALLE FORT
Galle is not unfamiliar with exceptional accommodations, both within and outside the Galle fort.
An abundance of exquisite hotels, many of which have a great colonial feel, are located in the enchanting fortress. These hotels also offer unique private courtyards and endearing rooms.
The decision to reside within the Fort or just outside is primarily contingent upon your travel budget.

The Heritage Hotel Galle Fort is a boutique hotel that is both opulent and vintage, located in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Galle Fort. The staff is exceptionally welcoming, and the accommodations are spacious. Additionally, the beds are comfortable.
The Bartizan Galle Fort | This heritage hotel is situated within the picturesque Galle Fort and offers a delightful blend of modern amenities and colonial elements. The experience of staying here is distinctive and luxurious.

WEATHER IN GALLE | OPTIMUM TIME TO VISIT GALLE FORT
February through April are the prime months for visiting Galle, with October to April being the optimal period. During this time, the climate is pleasant and there is minimal rainfall, which makes it an enjoyable time to investigate Galle Fort and its surroundings.
Please be advised that Galle is considerably more congested during this season.
Galle is frequently regarded as a year-round destination; however, it is not uncommon to encounter an increase in precipitation during the southwest monsoon, which spans from May to September.
In September, I had the opportunity to visit Galle Fort in person and experience the best of both cultures. It is important to remember that the weather may not always be favorable when traveling during the shoulder season.
ACCESSING GALLE FORT
BY TRAIN
The most spectacular and optimal method of transportation to Galle is undoubtedly the train voyage along the picturesque coastline, particularly if you intend to visit after Colombo, Hikkaduwa, or Mirissa (Weligama Railway Station). It is relatively simple to travel between Colombo Fort (which makes pauses in Hikkaduwa) and Galle, provided that you refrain from traveling during high hours.

I highly recommend traveling by local bus if you are interested in visiting Galle after Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, or Mirissa. Using local buses as your mode of transportation is a cost-effective and excellent method of gaining a sense of the country and its inhabitants.

A direct bus service from Colombo to Galle is available.
I suggest that you either take the train or choose the more luxurious direct bus from Colombo to Galle (with air conditioning), which departs from the Maharagama bus station. This is assuming that you are intending to travel from Colombo. It is important to note that this bus station is located approximately 15 kilometers south of the city center, which makes it challenging to access during high hours.

Duration of travel: 1.5 to 2 hours, with departures occurring every 15 minutes.

It is also feasible for individuals who are financially constrained to utilize the local bus service to travel from Colombo to Galle. This journey is considerably more time-consuming, resulting in a voyage that is quite taxing.
