Although Colombo is the commercial capital and by far the largest city in Sri Lanka, it's still relatively small. You will be staying directly in the city of Colombo.

Those who arrive early can make a Colombo city tour on their own or with help of your guide. First, check out the sights on foot, then soak up some epic views and learn all about the history and culture of Wattala. If you’d prefer to explore on your own, perhaps stroll the seaside observing the local fishing craft and perhaps feasting on fresh seafood. The beautiful surrounding countryside is best explored on a bicycle, which you can rent with help from the hotel reception.

Head to the fish market in Negombo this morning. This can be quite an intense affair, but the variety of fish being presented by the locals is a great experience.
From Negombo, continue your journey by private vehicle to Sigiriya. Visit numerous temples and ancient monuments in Anuradhapura on the way, which should take around five hours in total (280 kilometres). Later visit Mihintale, Aukana Buddha statues.

Anuradhapura
Anuradhapura with the recent excavations, the history goes back to the 8th C.BC. Or 2800 BP. However, legends take history more than 3000-5000 years. (Ramayana is one of them) at that time there were 04 tribes living in Sri Lanka. Kingdom lasted one thousand and five hundred years from 380BC. This city is home to many of the earliest and grandest monuments of Sri Lanka. A popular destination for the Sinhalese Buddhist pilgrimage because of its many ancient Buddhist monuments.
Anuradhapura has been made the royal capital by king Pandukabhaya in 380 BC. It remained the residence and royal capital for 119 successive Singhalese kings till the year 1000 AD when it was abandoned and the capital moved to Polonnaruwa. You will see some of the most famous as well as the tallest dagoba of Sri Lanka, remains from palaces, temples, monasteries, ceremonial baths and the temple of the holy Bo tree. This tree was grown from a Sapling of the very tree under which more than 2500 years ago the Buddha found enlightenment. You will visit all these places on our hop-on hop-off Anuradhapura City Tour.
• Ruwanwelisaya-It is a “stupa” that is built by King Dutugamunu and is one of the biggest completed ones to date.
• Thuparamaya-It is the oldest ‘dagoba’ in Sri Lanka, and possibly the oldest visible one in the world.
• Lovamahapaya-The significance of this building is that the roof was once covered in bronze tiles.
• Abhayagiri-It is one of the biggest viharas in Anuradhapura. It was a monastery of 5000 monks.
• Jethavanaramaya-It is a sacred world heritage site and accommodated some 3000 monks at the time. It is also quite similar to Abhayagiri.
• Mirisavetiya-This stupa was built by King Dutugamunu after defeating King Elara.
• Lankaramaya-This is also built by a king called King Valagamba in the Anuradhapura Kingdom times and is one of the eight sacred places in the city.
Aukana Buddha Statue
The Avukana statue is considered to be one of the best examples of a standing statue of the Buddha from ancient Sri Lanka. The Avukana statue is a standing statue of the Buddha near Kekirawa in North Central Sri Lanka. The statue, which has a height of more than 46 feet (14 m), was carved out of a large granite rock face during the 5th century. It depicts a variation of the Abhaya mudra, and the closely worn robe is elaborately carved. Constructed during the reign of Dhatusena, it may have been made as a result of a competition between a master and a pupil. The Avukana statue is one of the best examples of a standing statue built in Sri Lanka. It is now a popular tourist attraction.
Mihintale
Mihintale is a mountain peak near Anuradhapura. It is one of the oldest religious sites in the world dating back to the 2nd century BC. King Devanampiyatissa built it. Temple is now a pilgrimage site and the site of many important religious monuments and abandoned structures such as an Ayurveda hospital.
Heinz E Müller-Dietz (Historia Hospitalium 1975) describes the hospital of Mihintale as being perhaps the oldest in the world.

After early breakfast leave for the first Sigiriya rock fortress and then to Polonnaruwa.
Morning: Climb the famous Sigiriya rock fortress and visit the rocky abode and water gardens, a UNESCO world heritage and one of the Wonders of the World.
Sigiriya
Sigiriya is located in the central Matale District near the town of Dambulla of the Central Province, Sri Lanka. The name refers to a site of historical and archaeological significance that is dominated by a massive column of rock nearly 200 meters (660 ft) high. According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle the Culavamsa the site was selected by King Kasyapa (477 – 495 CE) for his new capital. He built his palace on the top of this rock and decorated its sides with colourful frescoes. On a small plateau about halfway up the side of this rock, he built a gateway in the form of an enormous lion. The name of this place is derived from this structure —Sīhāgiri, the Lion Rock. The capital and the royal palace were abandoned after the king's death. It was used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century.
Later, early afternoon visit Polonnaruwa historical city. The Polonnaruwa city tour lasts around 2 hours.
Polonnaruwa
Polonnaruwa is the second most historical city in Sri Lanka. It was made the capital of Sri Lanka after Anuradhapura. The second most ancient of Sri Lanka's kingdoms, Polonnaruwa was first declared the capital city by King Vijayabahu I, who defeated the Chola invaders in 1070 to reunite the country once more under a local leader.
Today the ancient city of Polonnaruwa remains one of the best-planned archaeological relic sites in the country, standing testimony to the discipline and greatness of the Kingdom's first rulers. Its beauty was also used as a backdrop to film scenes for the Duran Duran music video Save a Prayer in 1982. The ancient city of Polonnaruwa has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO.

Gal Vihara
The Gal Vihara is a rock temple of the Buddha situated in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, It was fashioned in the 12th century by Parakramabahu I. The central feature of the temple is four rock relief statues of the Buddha, which have been carved into the face of a large granitic (granite gneiss) rock. The images consist of a large seated figure, another smaller seated figure inside an artificial cavern, a standing figure and a reclining figure. These are considered to be some of the best examples of ancient Sinhalese sculpting and carving arts and have made the Gal Vihara the most visited monument at Polonnaruwa.

After breakfast leave for the hotel in Kandy, En route, Stop At Dambulla golden temple and Muttumari Amman temple in Matale, Where you can witness one of the most scenic Hindu temples on the island.
You will do the city tour of Kandy in the afternoon, including a visit to the temple of the sacred tooth relic, and a Kandyan cultural show duration.
Dambulla golden temple
In the 1st century BC, the king of Anuradhapura fled the city due to a South Indian invasion and took refuge in the caves of Dambulla. On recapturing Anuradhapura after 13 years, the king converted the caves into a monastery and gifted them to the Buddhist monks.
Spice/Herbal garden
Spice garden Matale is one of the most popular places among tourists to see indigenous spices such as cinnamon, pepper, cardamom etc as well as herbal plants used in Ayurveda.

After a leisurely breakfast leave for Kandy city and a walking tour. Your Kandy tour starts with a walking tour around the lake, Kandy market and downtown Kandy. Later move to the Ancient part of Kandy where you find the Peradeniya botanical garden, tooth relic temple, museum, and many other temples.
In the afternoon we planned a trek through the beautiful countryside and tea plantations in Kandy. This is a light trek that lasts a little longer than 3 hours. The participants are required to have moderate physical fitness in order to take this activity. Trekking through the tea plantation is an optional activity, therefore, anyone not interested can spend at the hotel and have leisure.
Royal botanical garden
Morning: After the elephant orphanage visits the Royal botanical garden of Peradeniya, which is the most popular garden on the island with an orchid house, palm alley, bamboo avenue, spice garden, flowering plant collection, and verandah collection.
Later visit Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
Sri Dalada Maligawa or the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy, which houses the relic of the tooth Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site partly due to the temple.
National museum
The Kandy National Museum opened in 1942 is located next to the sacred Temple of the Tooth and is housed in a section of the Royal Palace where the King’s concubines resided. This museum has over 5000 objects on display and among the most impressive exhibits are king Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe II's golden crown and a copy of the 1815 treaty known as the ‘Kandyan Convention’ by which on March 2, 1815, Ceylon ceded to the British ending 2,357 years of monarchy.
Arts and crafts center
Arts and crafts are an integral part of Sri Lanka’s ancient cultural heritage. Traditional Sri Lankan crafts are vital industries in many parts of the island that include wood carving, mask making, drum making, mat weaving, handlooms, lac-work, rush and read products etc.
The royal palace
The last king to reside in the Royal Palace was King Sri Wickrama Rajasinhe until he was overthrown by the British in 1815 with the aid of Kandyan chieftains. Once part of a large palace complex that included the Raja Wasala, (King’s Palace), Magul Maduwa (Royal Audience Hall), Meda Wasala (Queens’ Palace), Palle Wasala (King’s Harem Quarters) and Ulpange (Queen’s Bathing Pavilion), together with the Temple of the Tooth.
Royal audience hall
The ‘Magul Maduwa’, a finely carved masterpiece in timber is where the king met his ministers and carried out his daily administrative tasks. Many historic events have taken place at this location and it was here that the British handed over the death sentence to the Sri Lankan national heroes Keppatipola Disave and Madugalle Disave. A replica of the Royal Audience hall of Kandy was constructed in granite in Colombo in 1948 to commemorate Sri Lanka’s Independence from the British.

You will also do an upper lake drive and visit the market square, gem lapidary and Gem shop. Your Kandy city tour includes visiting souvenir shops and walking tour of the Kandy market, and more. making, mat weaving, handlooms, lac-work, rush and read products etc.
Kandy city walk
Your Kandy city walk starts near Kandy Lake. Your guide leads you to the picturesque and important corners of the city such as Kandy Lake, Kandy fish market, vegetable market, clock tower area, and Bazar area. The walking tour lasts about 2-3 hour.
After exploring the hotspots in the city your will be heading to Udawattekele sanctuary to have a leisurely hike through the forest. Udawattekele sanctuary is a place to see a large number of fauna and flora and it is one of the best places for bird watching.

Kandy / Nuwara Eliya
This morning, say goodbye to Kandy as you hop on a train for around 4 hours to Nuwara Eliya. It’s a kinda long trip, but you can buy all sorts of yummy treats from the onboard sellers. Upon reaching Nuwara Eliya check-in at the hotel and leisure. Once you've dropped off your luggage, perhaps head out for a visit to a local tea factory. Hill country train journey
The hill train trip country is an opportunity to see some of the finest scenery in Sri Lanka's hill country. The landscape beyond the track is truly dazzling. The lush mountain vistas dominated every inch of the journey.
The hill country train trip is one of the world’s most beautiful train trips, the seven hour-journey passes through tea estates dotted with workers in brightly coloured saris, pine forests, waterfalls, mountains, and gorges. The railway, built by the British in 1864 to transport tea and coffee from the Hill Country to the capital, Colombo, is now one of the best ways to explore the villages, towns, and national parks along the way.
Tea factory
On a tea plantation visit, you can learn about tea picking and processing and enjoy some fine Sri Lankan tea tasting. It’s probably a much more exciting prospect if you’re a tea lover, but even if you’re not, the Hill Country (or Tea Country, as it’s sometimes called) is arguably the most scenic part of the island and worth a visit.
You’ll find rolling hills clad with row upon row of luscious, green tea plants. It’s often shrouded in a fine mist and is the perfect escape from the heat of Sri Lanka’s wonderful beaches (if you need an escape!).
Nuwar Eliya city walk
A walking tour of Nuwara Eliya involves scenic views of Sri Lanka's forested hills. One can take a stroll around the tea plantations and visit the many different sightseeing places around. It is known as 'Little England', and has old buildings with colonial and Tudor architecture, making it a pleasant place for walking around. The town also has many historical sites and temples, that are valuable to different cultures. After breakfast venture out onto Ella Gap, mini-Adams peak and the nine-arch bridge this morning. We'll stop in a small mountain village for a spicy curry lunch and a pot of Ceylon tea. This is an excellent way of getting to know the area and a great opportunity to rub shoulders with the locals. In the afternoon drive to the hotel in Yala.
Evening a visit to the Kataragama temple, which is the most popular temple in southern Sri Lanka.
Historical Sita temple
Sita Amman Temple is located approximately 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) from Hakgala Botanical Garden and 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from Nuwara Eliya. The temple is located in the village of Sita Eliya (also known as Sita Eliya). This place is believed to be the site where Sita was held captive by Asur Samrat (Devil King) Ravana, and where she prayed daily for Rama to come and rescue her in the Hindu epic, Ramayana. On the rock face across the stream are circular depressions said to be the footprints of Lord Hanuman.
Nine arch bridge
The nine arch Bridge is considered one of the great sites in railway engineering. The nine arch bridge is located just a couple of kilometres from the Ella holiday resort near the Ella railway station. It is one of teh very popular sites in Ella and it is on the bucket list of every tourist, who visits Ella on their trip. The nine-arch bridge is a masterpiece of colonial-era construction. The construction was completed in 1921 during the British colonial era. The bridge is 100 meters long and rises up to 33 meters from the valley below. The awe-inspiring views from the highrise bridge take the travellers by surprise. The architecture of the nine-arch bridge is masterminded by a local constructor from Welimada, a small town a few kilometres down the road.
Buduruwagala temple
Buduruwagala is an ancient Buddhist temple in southern Sri Lanka. The complex consists of seven statues and belongs to the Mahayana school of thought. The statues date back to the 10th century. The gigantic Buddha statue still bears traces of its original stuccoed robe and a long streak of orange suggests it was once brightly painted. The centre of the three figures to the Buddha's right is thought to be the Buddhist mythological figure-the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara. To the left of this white-painted figure is a female figure in the thrice-bent posture, which is thought to be his consort-Tara.
Kataragama temple
Kataragama temple, Sri Lanka, is a temple complex dedicated to the Buddhist guardian deity Kataragama devil and Hindu War God Murugan. It is one of the few religious sites in Sri Lanka that is venerated by the Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and the Vedda people. For most of the past millennia, it was a jungle shrine very difficult to access; today it is accessible by an all-weather road. The shrines and the nearby Kiri Vehera are managed by Buddhists, the shrines dedicated to Teyvāṉai and Shiva are managed by Hindus and the mosque by Muslims.

With early morning pick-up (with breakfast packets) from your hotel in Tissamaharama, you will be heading to the Yala wildlife park entrance, which is about 30 minutes away from your hotel.
Full-day safari
Morning: Yala national park is the most visited national park on the island, which is considered to be one of the best places for a safari in Sri Lanka. Full-day Yala safari starts in the early morning and lasts till late evening giving you all the opportunities to spot leopards, elephants, bears, crocodiles and many other creatures plus avian fauna species.
Yala is considered to be one of the best places to witness leopards in the world. There were 17 ½ leopards in every 100 square kilometres in Yala national park. Block 1 of Yala National park could be home to the densest population of leopards in the world, the densities in this tiny area have maintained around a leopard every 2 sq. kilometres. Unlike most other national parks where leopards can be seen in the dark Sri Lanka leopards are on the move during the day as well.

Special Information
Tourism in Sri Lanka is booming, and with it has come to a huge increase in visitors to Yala National Park. Over tourism and lack of sustainable management practices have become a major concern for us in continuing to visit Yala. In order to reduce our impact on wildlife and the environment, we are trialling visiting a less touristic section of Yala, known as Block 5. Should we determine that high tourist numbers at Block 5 also make it difficult to continue visiting responsibly we will change our itinerary to visit Udawalawe National Park, where wild elephants, wild buffalo, sambar deer and leopards also reside.
From September through October when Yala National Park has closed annually for infrastructure development and rejuvenation we go on a jeep safari in Udawalawe National Park. Udawalawe is home to wild elephants, wild buffalo, sambar deer and leopards.
Once settled, you'll head out on a jeep safari where you'll come across the area's native wildlife such as elephants, leopards and aquatic birds. This is an amazing experience that you'll never forget. After your day in nature soak in the view from the lovely hotel pool overlooking lake Tissa.

Yala / Galle
After the leisurely breakfast at your hotel in Yala head to a beach resort in Galle, southern Sri Lanka. You will be stopping at a few places before arriving at your hotel in Galle.
Mirissa
Mirissa is famous for Blue Whales and tourists have seen them throughout the years although whales consider migrating mammals. while blue whales are around here most days Bryde's whales and fin whales also recorded a few days in each month. Sperm whale pods are seen in Mirissa mostly in a few days only in march and April. killer whales and short-finned pilot whales are also spotted from time to time.
Turtle conservation center
Projects have been launched to conserve the population of turtles that are reaching extinction and such projects are found along the southern coast of Sri Lanka where turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. The turtle digs a hole on the Beach, Lays her eggs and covers it with sand where it is supposed to, incubate by the heat of the sun. What often happens is, the eggs are dug out by fishermen and sold to people who consume them.
But now the eggs are bought up by the conservation projects and are hatched the Natural way in enclosed areas where the Birds don’t have a chance of picking them up and the babies are let into the sea after two days at night time which offers them a better chance of survival.
City of Galle
Galle is one of the ancient seaports of Sri Lanka and was an anchor point in the Silk Route. It was later discovered by the Portuguese where they built a fortress and the Dutch that succeeded them fortified it further. This fortress is today a World Heritage Site.
Stop at stilt fishermen
Stilt Fishing is a traditional and unique style of fishing practised by local fishermen in Sri Lanka, especially on the southern coast. With a perfect balance and an insurmountable amount of patience, fishermen perch themselves on cross-shaped beams and wait for their catch of the day! Your driver/guide stops in Ahnagma allowing you to have a closer look into the stilt fishermen, and perhaps try this unique fishing method on your own.
Galle Fort
The fort has a colourful history, and today has a multi-ethnic and multi-religious population. The Sri Lankan government and many Dutch people who still own some of the properties inside the fort are looking at making this one of the modern wonders of the world. The heritage value of the fort has been recognized by UNESCO and the site has been inscribed as a cultural heritage UNESCO World Heritage Site under criteria iv, for its unique exposition of "an urban ensemble which illustrates the interaction of European architecture and South Asian traditions from the 16th to the 19th centuries.

Hikkaduwa is one of the most popular tourist destinations in southern Sri Lanka. It is 98 km south of Colombo and its beautiful beaches a lot of glamour to this town. It is the place where you can have a glimpse of the fascinating underwater world and see the creatures that inhabit the unfathomable depths of the sea. The famed coral gardens are located here. Just get hold of a glass-bottomed boat or goggles and flippers and plunge into the ocean.

Many dozens of seafood restaurants are dotted along Hikkaduwa beach and offer a wide range of fresh seafood specialities. A large number of travellers stopped at Hikkaduwa to sample seafood. Bentota
If you are looking for an ideal romantic beach holiday Bentota located 62 km south of Colombo is the ideal place to go. The place is a small town fast developing, teeming with the growth of hotels, shopping arcades and cafeterias. There is also an open-air theatre where folk and mask dancing is performed. This section of the southwestern coast gives a typical picture of a tropical beach dotted with palm trees; white sandy drenches and blue waters.
Madu River safari
In the global context, the ecological importance of this site has garnered it the ‘Ramsar Wetland’ status in 2003 being the second largest wetland in Sri Lanka with a colossal 915 hectares with 23 islands inhabited by nearly 300 families. The River Sanctuary is now a Tourist Development Area and a Special Area Managed (SAM) by the Coast Conservation Department. Balapitiya is where the ‘Madu Ganga’ makes its home.

Due to the financial crisis some places such as restaurants, bars, hotels are closed, but many of those that are open, are giving their all to make your journey amazing.
The fuel crisis is still visible, but for tourists exceptions and priorities are made.

What a great trip ititnerray to see Sri Lanka. There is a good mix of archaeology, religious temples and beaches. It is hard to pick our favourite part, but walking in the tea plantations has to be up there so is the leisure on the pristine beaches. Our guide was excellent and very helpful. The leader had good information and support and managed the trip well. Highly recommend this trip.

We enjoyed the trip a lot in the first week, however, the government of Sri Lanka closed all the toruist places suddenly due to the COVID19 and we missed few places including wildlife park. Overall one of the best trips if you want to see the important toruist sites of Sri Lanka over a short amount of time in a well organised manner. Mix of touristy activities, shopping with some more authentic experiences, and plenty of leisure, which I enjoyed most. My only advice would be to factor in the tipping at the end of the trip (which felt quite compulsory rather than optional) and the fact that there isn’t a lot of down time/time to explore by yourself… The trip is very minutely coordinated and sometimes I felt I wasn’t able to stretch my travelling legs. If you are looking for an active trip, this isn’t it! this is a very relaxing and luxury trip.

Highlights of the trip included being awed by the anceint monuments in Sigiriy, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla and anuradhapura. Wildlife safari was fantastic, learning about Sri Lankan cuisine at a cooking class in Yala and experiencing lunch with a local family was brilian. I am most grateful to our excellent driver/guide Thusal, he was a great companion to us and did far more than what he had to do as guide. He adjusted to our every need, protected us from getting “attacked” by Tourguides at Sigiriya, kept us on good time, found the best local places for 250rupee rice and curry lunches, kept us motivated at the 4.30am wake up for Horton PlainsYala national park safari, laughed with us when went for High Tea sweaty dressed in dirty sports clothes, took us shopping at local stores for supplies we needed and hunted the best pineapples with us – he was there for us at all hours of the day! On the first day in Colombo (before the tour had started), we met Gayan at teh airport and he brought us to the pegasus reef hotel and give us some recommendations for things to do that day. We were extremely impressive with Gayan’s attentiveness and enthusiasm. The trip gave us a wonderful insight into srilanka culture, food, nature and traditions and we loved every moment of it.
