When would you recommend visiting Sri Lanka for a 10 day tour?
This 10-day Sri Lanka tour can be taken at any time of year because Sri Lanka is a popular tourist destination all year round. There should be some variation in the schedule, though, depending on when you visit the island. The monsoon plays a crucial role in Sri Lanka’s weather as the island receives two separate monsoons each year. Only one monsoon at a time can enter the island, and each one affects a different part of the island. This means that at any given time of year, just a fraction of the island is subject to the monsoons and their accompanying deluges of rain. Below are two monsoons that:
Travel plan for 10 days in Sri Lanka during the Southwest Monsoon (May–October)
The strong rains brought by the southwest monsoon flood a significant portion of the island, from the west coast beaches to the south coast and the mountains. While the west and south coasts are not ideal for beach vacations at this time of year, the east coast is dry and boasts the best locations for such trips. East coast beaches like Argam Bay and Pasikudah are ideal for a beach vacation from May to October, so be sure to include these on your Sri Lanka 10-day travel schedule. From May till October, the southwest monsoon is at its peak.
The Northeast monsoon (November–April) is a beautiful time to visit Sri Lanka for 10 days.
The northeast monsoon, as its name suggests, blows in from the northeastern coast of Sri Lanka and sends torrential downpours to the island’s northeast. The waters off the east and north coasts are not swimmable from November through April due to the northeast monsoon. Hikkaduwa Beach and Bentota Beach, both in southwest Sri Lanka, are excellent options for a beach vacation throughout the winter months of November through April.
Travellers with 10 days in Sri Lanka can choose whether or not to see the country’s north and east.
Most 10-day Sri Lanka itineraries skip northern and eastern Sri Lanka. Since the end of the civil war in 2009, however, Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Kalkudah, Pasikudah, and Jaffna have all been on the tourism map. From May to October, a large number of tourists visit this region of Sri Lanka to learn more about its Hindu culture, enjoy its magnificent beaches, and marvel at its interesting terrain. However, because of time constraints, the northeastern part of Sri Lanka is not included in this 10-day itinerary.

Cost of a 10-Day Tour to Sri Lanka
The majority of the cost for this 10-day trip to Sri Lanka goes towards lodging, transportation, and entry fees. Depending on the hotel’s star rating, the cost of a 10-day trip to Sri Lanka might rise to over $1,000. In contrast, the hotels on this 10-day Sri Lankan vacation are all 4-star establishments. The price per participant for the 10-day trip is $890 USD.
From personal experience, I can say that booking a five-star hotel is not necessary for a pleasant and secure beach vacation in Sri Lanka. Dorms, guest homes, rest houses, rent rooms, and other similar establishments offer beautiful, quiet, and clean lodging at a fraction of the cost of a hotel.
Where should you stay on your 10-day self-guided tour of Sri Lanka?
There is a wide range of hotel options, each catering to a different budget, in tourist hotspots. There are three major categories that can be used to classify these lodging options: high-end hotels, moderate hotels, and cheap hotels. While on tour, if you can book your hotel room directly with the establishment, you can save money by skipping the middle man and getting a better deal. In particular, with guest house-style, low-cost lodging options.
At more modest lodging establishments like inns and B&Bs, clients can haggle over the cost of their rooms, unlike at chain hotels where everything is included in the advertised price. Most of these low-cost hotels are entirely managed by their individual proprietors.
Be prepared to haggle if you want to find a cheap place to stay. Talk it over with the people helping you out with lodging. There may be an additional 10%–30% added to your total if you book through a third party.
The most efficient method of transportation throughout your 10-day trip to Sri Lanka
After lodging, transportation is the single most critical aspect of a 10-day trip to Sri Lanka. A friendly local driver’s private car is the best and most convenient way to travel around Sri Lanka. If you’re not used to the island’s crazy traffic, getting around can be a challenge. It is highly suggested that any visitors from outside the country rent a car with a local driver. Hiring a private driver in your destination allows you to see more of the area at your own pace while freeing up more of your itinerary for leisure activities. After all, that was one less thing to worry about.
We have scheduled your transportation in an air-conditioned, high-end vehicle so that you can see all 15 of Sri Lanka’s must-see attractions in just 10 days. The most cutting-edge comforts, like reclining seats, WiFi, climate control, etc., are available in this fully air-conditioned car.

Day 1 of 10 day Sri Lanka tour
Colombo is the starting point of a 10-day journey in Sri Lanka. Since the majority of international visitors fly into Katunayake International Airport, which is conveniently located close to Negombo, Alternatively, they may use the Colombo harbour to enter the nation. Because of this, this 10-day Sri Lanka tour, like most Sri Lanka vacation packages, begins in Colombo.
Most vacationers would rather rest on the first day of their trip after a long flight than embark on a rigorous sightseeing itinerary. Some of our visitors spend more than a day (24 hours) travelling from their home country to Colombo; by the time they arrive in Sri Lanka, they are famished, exhausted, and in desperate need of a place to rest. Therefore, most visitors to Sri Lanka want to relax immediately upon touching down. We have made arrangements for the first night of our 10-day vacation to Sri Lanka to be spent in Negombo, so as to meet this need. At the same time, the day will be spent doing nothing more than lounging on a beach. After a short journey from the airport, you can relax and unwind at a beach resort for the first night of your trip.
On the first day of a 10-day trip to Sri Lanka, relax in Negombo.
Located on Sri Lanka’s western coast, Negombo has become a popular tourist destination. The international airport is in close proximity to Negombo. Whether you’re looking for a place to stay, eat, play, or visit the sights, Negombo has you covered. The majority of hotels and motels are located on Lewis Road, which is where the vast majority of visitors end up.
Since Negombo does not feature on any recommended itineraries for seeing the best of Sri Lanka in 10 days, you won’t be able to enjoy the city’s highlights during your trip. The Negombo fish market, lagoons, and a few cathedrals are just a few of the sights that can be arranged through Seerendipity Tours.
On our 10-day journey to Sri Lanka, we intend to spend the first night at a beach resort in Negombo.
Day 2 of 10-day Sri Lanka tour: Negombo and the city of Anuradhapura
The cultural triangle is the first stop on a Sri Lankan 10-day vacation itinerary. Most tourists dream of visiting the cultural triangle and spending time exploring its ancient sites. Since the cultural triangle is a common topic of inquiry among tourists booking Sri Lanka 10-day itineraries, we’ve made sure to include visits to its most notable sites. The first stop on your cultural triangle toru should be the ancient city of Anuradhapura.
Where do we go on Day 2 and what do we get to see?
- Ancient Anuradhapura
- Statue of Buddha in Aukana
- Cultural landmarks of Mihintale

Dating back to the third century BC, Anuradhapura was Sri Lanka’s first capital. All cultural sightseeing excursions begin in Anuradhapura, a city that UNESCO has designated as a World Heritage Site. One of the 15 top sites to see in Sri Lanka within 10 days, the ancient city of Anuradhapura is located in the north-central region.
Touring Sri Lanka for 10 days, including a stop at Mihintale
The Buddhist faith in Sri Lanka can trace its origins back to Mihintale. Mihintale Temple is not only one of the oldest but also one of the most significant Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka. King Devanampiytissa established the temple in Mihintale in the second century BC. A Stupa, Buddha statues, and the remnants of an ancient hospital are just some of the many historical artifacts that may be seen by visitors to the site.
On our 10-day tour to Sri Lanka, we made a stop at the Buddhist sculptures of Aukana.
In Sri Lanka’s north-central province, you’ll find a hidden gem known as Aukana. Due to its remote position in Sri Lanka, this temple is often overlooked by visitors. The temple was built during the time of King Dhathusena in the fifth century AD, however, therefore it is historically significant. This temple is not just one of the oldest in Sri Lanka, but also an outstanding example of ancient Sri Lankan stonework. The most eye-catching aspect of the temple is the Aukana Buddha statue, which was carved by hand out of a single block of granite. The statue of Buddha, which stands at 14 meters in height, is 46 feet tall and in excellent shape.
After spending the day at the Buddha statues at Anuradhapura, Mihintale, and Aukana, you’ll head to Sigiriya, where you’ll spend the night in the Palace of the Lions (Habaran). If you plan to stop at some of the above attractions, your day trip could take as long as eight hours.
Day 3 of 10 day Sri Lanka tour
The city of Habarana, in Sri Lanka’s central north, is known for its easygoing atmosphere. Habarana is in the exact geographical center of the Sri Lanka cultural triangle, making it the most popular starting point for tours of this area. Sigiriya, Dambulla, Anuradhapura, Kandy, and Polonnaruwa can all be reached quickly and easily from Habarana thanks to its prime location in the cultural triangle. However, Habarana does not cover the best tourist attractions in Sri Lanka that may be seen in a week.
Day 3 of a 10-day tour, what are the most important sights to see?
Pidurangala, a historical temple

Day 4 of 10-day Sri Lanka tour
Discover the old city of Sigiriya after a hearty meal. The time spent exploring the Sigiriya rock fortification is roughly three hours. Our guide will tell you all about the best tourist spots in and around Sigiriya, and there are a lot of them! After that, you can take your time exploring Habarana and Sigiriya. Later in the day, stop by the Golden Temple of Dambulla.
When planning a 10-day trip to Sri Lanka, what should visitors plan to see on day 4?
- The gilded Dambulla Temple
- Rock fortress of Sigiriya
Sigiriya rock ascent on 10-day Sri Lanka trip
The cost to visit Sigiriya is $30 USD per person. However, if you purchase a 10-day tour of Sri Lanka with Seerendipity Tours, your guide will show you around the Sigiriya rock fortress at no extra cost.
To beat the heat, you’ll start your ascent of the rock face either very early in the morning or late in the afternoon. You may get thirsty as you climb, so remember to bring some water. It’s time to rest and refuel at a nearby eatery after a morning of exploring the rock citadel.
If you plan on exploring the Sigiriya rock castle on your own, you may want to consider hiring a guide to help you understand more about the site’s rich history. These tour guides have extensive knowledge of the area and can communicate with visitors in nearly any language. The typical guiding fee is around Rs 2500; however, this should be negotiated with the guide before beginning the ascent. However, a local guide won’t be necessary if you bring a handbook.
On a 10-day trip to Sri Lanka, don’t miss a trip to the golden temple of Dambulla.
The Buddhist community has continued to worship in the Dambulla Golden Temple for over 2000 years. It’s another piece of beauty in Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle. This is the world’s largest cave temple and the largest natural cave temple in Sri Lanka. The historical and spiritual significance of the Dambulla Golden Temple has led to its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to records, King Walagambahu built the temple in the 1st century BC. This lavish Buddhist temple, housed in five natural caves, features hundreds of statues and several murals.
Day 5 of 10-day Sri Lanka tour
The next morning, after breakfast, head to Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka’s second-most-historical city. A trip to Sri Lanka can be completed in 10 days if Polonnaruwa is included. It takes about an hour and 45 minutes to drive from Habarana to Polonnaruwa. US$25 gets you into both the museum and the Polonnaruwa archaeological site. Tickets are sold exclusively in the museum’s archaeological shop.
Polonnaruwa, another ancient city, is not as large as Anuradhapura, therefore it is easy to get around on foot. Bicycling is another common means of transportation between the city’s landmarks. After supper, you’ll head back to your Habarana hotel for the night.
What are the best places to visit on day 5 of a 10-day trip to Sri Lanka?
- The Ancient City of Polonnaruwa
- Safari of Minneriya National park
- The Village tour of Kimbissa
Day 6 of 10-day Sri Lanka tour
After breakfast, you should head to Kandy, another must-see on the island. The city of Kandy is another highlight of a 10-day trip to Sri Lanka. It takes about 2 hours to drive from Habarana to Kandy, which is located 100 kilometers away. Our 10-day tour of Sri Lanka will have its home base in Kandy for the next two days.
On the road to Kandy from Habarana, there are a number of worthwhile stops to break up the journey; how much time is spent at each location will, of course, vary. Between Habaran and Kandy, you can see the spice garden, the Muttumari Amman temple, a Batik factory, and Matale Aluvihara, all of which are worth your time.
In the afternoon, you’ll take a tour of Kandy, stopping at the Royal Botanical Gardens, witnessing a traditional performance, and visiting the Temple of the Tooth Relic. The shopping district is a must-see for most vacationers. It won’t take you long to get from one to the other, as they’re all conveniently near together. In fact, everywhere else save the Royal Botanical Gardens is within walking distance.
What should I see and do on Day 6 of a 10-day trip to Sri Lanka?
- Matale’s Spice Garden
- Temple of the Relic of the Tooth
- Festival of Kandyan Culture
- Peradeniya botanical Garden
- Kandy city
- Museum of Gems
- Art gallery
Ten-day Sri Lanka trip includes stop at temple housing sacred tooth relic
The city’s main draw is the shrine housing the tooth relic. The service rituals at 05:30, 09:30, and 18:00 daily are the finest times to see the temple housing the tooth relic. Explore the Thevava ceremony in further detail.
Day 7 of 10-day Sri Lanka tour
You’ve been in Sri Lanka for six days, long enough to get to know the culture and people. We’re taking a trip to the mountain town of Nuwara Eliya today, which is famed for its pleasant weather and spas. We spent 10 days traveling around Sri Lanka and this was one of our favorite stops.
On day seven of a 10-day trip to Sri Lanka, what should travelers expect to see?
- The City of Nuwara Eliya
- The Lake of Gregory
- Victoria Park
- Assembly line and tea garden
Itinerary for 10 days in Sri Lanka: a picturesque train ride through the island’s interior
Our goal is to take the train from Kandy to Nanu Oya in the morning after we eat breakfast. Nanu Oya is the closest station to Nuwara Eliya. One of the world’s most beautiful train rides is the one from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya. Several trains leave Kandy for Nuwara Eliya every day. You will be taking an early morning train from Kandy.
Seerendipity Tours will take care of getting you a rail ticket. The cost of the train ride is incorporated into the starting price of the 10 Sri Lanka vacation package. You’ll have a more pleasant experience in the second-class cabins. The train ride is around four hours long, during which time you will pass stunning natural landscapes such as mountains, waterfalls, tea plantations, and numerous tunnels.
Tour through Nuwara Eliya and Sri Lanka’s highlands over the course of 10 days
Nuwara Eliya’s attractions include the Victoria Garden, Gregory Lake, and the downtown area. Visit the Pedro Tea Factory, located just 10 minutes outside of Nuwara Eliya, to see the tea-making process first-hand.
Day 8 of 10-day Sri Lanka tour
Leave Nuwara Eliya in the morning and go to Tissamaharama in southern Sri Lanka. The trip is around three hours long and includes two stops (one at Ravana Falls and the other at the Sita Amman temple). You will arrive at the hotel about lunchtime, rest for a while, and then have lunch before visiting Yala National Park.
Where do you recommend going on day 8 of a ten-day Itinerary in Sri Lanka?
- Yala National Park
- Temple of Sita Amman
- Temple of Kataragama
The 10 day Sri Lanka itinerary includes a safari to Yala National Park.
Strangely, there doesn’t seem to be any places to stay in Yala that are close to the wildlife reserve. Despite Yala National Park being the top tourist destination in southern Sri Lanka, there are not many places to stay in the immediate area. The Yala National Park is a must see if you only have 10 days in Sri Lanka.
Tissamaharama is where you’ll find the most of the island’s hotels and other lodging options. It takes around an hour and a half in a private vehicle to travel from Tissamaharama to Yala National Park.
It takes about four hours to go from Nuwara Eliya to Tissamharama, and we schedule the Yala safari for the afternoon. The Yala safari is best started around 1400 hrs. from Tissamaharama. The heat of the day subsides in the late afternoon, making it the ideal time to see wild animals. The jeeps and park fees for your safari are taken care of by Seerendipity Tours. The safari’s official kickoff time will be relayed to you by your guide.
Ten-day Itinerary in Sri Lanka: Kataragama and Murugan Temples
Located in the southern part of Sri Lanka, the Kataragama Temple (also known as the Murugan Temple) is the most visited religious and historical monument. Every day, thousands of worshippers make their way to the temple. If you’re interested in visiting this active temple, you can take a bus from Tissamharama to Kataragama. A little distance separates you from Tissamaharama and the temple. The Kataragama Temple is free to all visitors.
Day 9 of ten-day Itinerary in Sri Lanka
Relax on the sands of Unawatuna Beach, located in the south, after a hearty breakfast. Unawatuna is often considered to be Sri Lanka’s most stunning remote beach. Some vacationers, however, schedule their safari for the same day they head to the beach.
What should one expect to see on day 9 of ten-day Itinerary in Sri Lanka?
- Sri Lanka’s southernmost beaches
- Shore at Mirissa
Planning a ten-day Itinerary in Sri Lanka and deciding which beach to visit
About half of the beachgoers who travel to the south end up on the west coast (at the Kalutara and Bentota beach resorts); about a quarter of the crowd chooses hotels in Hikkaduwa and Galle; and the remaining tens of thousands of people choose hotels in Matara, Mirissa, Hambantota, Tangalle, and other beaches in the deep south.
Sea bathing, scuba diving, snorkelling, boating, and other saltwater pursuits are all options at the Unawatuna beach resort. There will be only one night spent at the beach resort. For a longer beach vacation, you can stay at the same resort or select a different beach hotel.
Day 10 of ten-day Itinerary in Sri Lanka
Visit Galle Fort and Hikkaduwa Beach on the way to Colombo after breakfast. Afternoon sightseeing in Colombo.
Where do we go on day 10 of the ten-day Itinerary in Sri Lanka?
- Fort Galle
- Hikkaduwa Seaside
- Estuary of the Madu River
- Fort Galle
The only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Southern Sri Lanka, the Galle Fort is a major tourist attraction. Since I had 10 days to spend in Sri Lanka, I decided to include a visit to Galle Fort. The fort, which dates back centuries, is a spectacular landmark in the area around the port of Galle. The visit to southern Sri Lanka is incomplete without seeing the Galle fortification.
